My name is Sheila and my husbands name is Ian.
Eighteen years ago when I was pregnant with my son, I saw some revolting pictures in a magazine of some starved and beaten greyhounds in a pile (about 15 of them). They were done racing and left to starve and be discarded because they were of no value anymore.
It was an image that has been in the back of my mind ever since.
About 5 days after I lost my special dog ROCKY (after 13 wonderful years) I saw a show that had a rescued greyhound by the name of Rocky. I thought to myself that this is a sign. It is time to see what I could do to help these wonderful animals from the abuse they endure when they could no longer make their owners money!!
I spent endless hours researching Greyhounds and more hours persuading my husband that we could do this. I would take care of him, we have a large enough yard, it's fenced, no they are not hyper.
There is a lot of misinformation out there.
I got a lot of Greyt information at Greyhound Gang. (And have gone to Kanab Utah for a "Greyhound Gathering". (more about that later)
Anyway, after convincing Ian that this is something I really wanted to do I went to AZ Greyhound rescue (fast dogs fast friends) and filled out the Adoption Application. With in a matter of a few days they had one all picked out for me!!
I had to get my house "O.K.ed". They actually came out and checked to make sure that I had a fenced yard. I am sure that they have guidelines about personalities too! Julie was the lady that came and did the in-home check. She is a wonderful lady and we are still friends today!
That's how I got DOMINO. (top picture, far dog on right) I rented a car, (my Suburban was in the shop), took my son (Joe) and off we went to Phoenix. Thats about 5 hours, 350 miles. I wanted my dog!! This is when I meet Debbie. She had about 21 Greys at the time.
It was love at first sight with my "Noser". I was totally amazed when she gave me his lead and I realized that they are already trained to walk on a lead and everything. They have been around dogs, (at the track) and walked lots. She told me at the time that I would be getting more. I was quite happy with ONE THANK YOU ANYWAY. House training was never an issue. Once was all it took.
Oh well, they say you can't have just one. About 10 months later I begged and pleaded with Ian to please get "Noser" a playmate.
I called Julie and found another group to adopt from. Thats how we became friends with Mike and Dee. They drove down to our house and "checked us out". Because she was our second I wanted to be a little more specific about color and size and stuff. They found us ANGEL (second dog large picture) on Valentines day. Well, Ian and Angel-Baby were a match made in Heaven. So my husband stole my valentine present!
Needless to say, I wanted another. I convinced my wonderful husband, admiditly the man can't tell me NO, to put our large house on the market, (4 bedrooms) small yard. My daughter was married and my son 16, and looking toward his future. We could get a much smaller house with a huge lot!! Thats when we moved to GREY ACRES. Two and one half acres.
I called Debbie again, and we adopted Darby (first dog large picture) and Cosmo (third dog large picture - - Mamas' MO MO).
